About the Barn

Rustic self catering barn

The owners, Chris and Sally, converted the Terrace Barn in 2022. It is perfectly located in beautiful rolling countryside at the foot of the Yorkshire Dales, between the pretty market towns of Ripon and Masham. It is easily accessible from the A1 and its situation between the Yorkshire Dales and the Moors provide a wide choice of opportunities to explore, including further afield to the dramatic east coast. It is the perfect location for people wanting to holiday in North Yorkshire, including the popular locations of York and Harrogate.

Set off the Masham Road via a 300m lane across a field, Terrace Barn offers quiet and private accommodation with long pastoral views across the fields towards the picture postcard village of West Tanfield. Relaxing on the terrace, guests can enjoy the view and beautiful sunsets over Well Bank to the west. The name, ‘Terrace Barn’ derives from the Georgian name given to the clifftop riverside walk along the river Ure which is just outside the Barn. This walk, which is part of a circular walk called the Ripon Rowel Walk, means you can walk from and back to the barn, maybe having dined at one of the three local pubs in North Stainley or West Tanfield. The Barn is also on the route of the Tour De France and is a great base for cyclists. There is a workshop with tools available for repairs, servicing and security.

Built of local honey-coloured stone, the Barn has been described as having a French rustic aesthetic from the outside. The interior, on the other hand, whilst being cosy, is anything but rustic, providing an exceptionally high standard of accommodation. Italian Cassina bendy back settees and the iconic Italian Flos Arca light in the living room, along with handmade wrought iron dining table and chairs designed by the owner, lit with a hand-blown glass pendant light. The rooms are decorated with original art work and ceramics throughout by renowned artists and makers.

The accommodation consists of entrance lobby with coat cupboard, a large living / dining room with cosy log burning stove and glass door to a paved terrace, reserved for guest use. There is a fully equipped Shaker style kitchen, a comfortable double bedroom with ensuite including a full-sized bath and shower over. A separate shower room with WC is also provided off the lobby.

The owners live in the adjacent Dutch style barn. They are on hand to welcome guests on their arrival and assist with local knowledge. They know the area well, Chris having grown up locally, and having lived at the Barn for more than fifteen years.

For those loving nature, you can see river birds such as Herons, Little Egrets, Dippers and Kingfishers to name just a few. Huge flocks of geese fly over from late summer. Also, buzzards, curlews etc. and a whole array of smaller birds such as meadow pipits and finches and sand martins.

If fishing is your thing, a day ticket from Ripon Piscatorial will see you fishing for grayling, brown trout, sea trout and salmon, and all just 100 yards from the barn. Even if you catch nothing, the river landscape is stunning and you might see an otter if you are very lucky.
